PROGRAM NOTES

Part of the purpose of the Barbershop Harmony Society is to encourage and preserve the American art form of the barbershop quartet. So, we’re also proud to present songs on this CD from three of our chapter quartets which won the coveted Central States District Quartet Championship over the years. The Keymasters [Hal Sienknecht (t), Vern Heliger (l), Bill Roberts (br), Dale Heiliger (bs)] were CSD Champs in 1949, and Red Rose Rag on this CD is from a transcription of a 1952 KFOR radio broadcast. The quartet learned Red Rose Rag because Barbershop Society founder O.C. Cash told them that he wished some quartet would perform that song. There are two versions of the 1978 Central States District Champs, The Chord Motor Company, on the CD. I Used to Call Her Baby was recorded in 1980, and features the original foursome: Dale Heiliger (t), Lance Powell (l), Al Dittmer (br), Dale Comer (bs). Have A Little Talk With Myself and When You Wore A Tulip were recorded in 1982 (as the Chairmen of the Chord), and are performed with Rick LaRosa singing lead. Rick took over the lead part in the quartet when Lance moved out of town, and barbershoppers will recognize his name as the lead from the 1999 International Champion Quartet, FRED. Finally, we feature three songs, In the Still of the Night, May I Never Love Again, and Sweet Georgia Brown from our 1999 District Champs, Sibling Rivalry [Kevin Burklund (t), Eric Bell (l), Ed Bell (br), Aaron Burklund (bs)]. That quartet, made up of two groups of brothers, was known for its energetic style and locked-in harmony.
